Jim Harrell will speak on the use of fresh plant material from your yard in floral arrangements.  He is editor of the American Rose Society’s Rose Arrangers’ Bulletin and is also District Chairman of Arrangement Judges.

November 5     Field Trip to The Vine

The Vine is hosting a workshop to make a  holiday wreath. Forms will be provided as well as a variety of berries, feathers, cedar, magnolia, pine and other materials to make a beautiful wreath for  your home.  Wine and cheese will be served.  Workshop is limited to 15 participants.  Cost is $50 all inclusive.

Cassina Members prepare floral arrangements for the Luncheon tables. The centerpieces are voted on by attendees using secret ballots, and the winner is announced at the end of the Luncheon.   Prizes are awarded to First, Second and Third place.

February 19  Field Trip:   Savannah Heritage Tour

Join our Tour Leader, Angela, of Savannah Heritage Tours for a 2 1/2 hour Bus, House and Garden Tour which will include the Savannah Historical District, the Davenport House and the Bonaventure Cemetery.  Car pools leave the Cabins at 9:00 a.m. with lunch at the Old Pink House on Abercorn Street.  Depart at 1 p.m. for private bus tour.

Limited to 14 people.  Cost per person excluding lunch is $38.00.

March 25 and 26 Field Trip:     Charleston Garden Get-Away

 

Depart St. Simons in the morning and travel by   motor coach to Middleton Plantation.  On to historic Charleston for overnight at Indigo Inn.  March 26 begins with a private tour of the Edmonston-Alston House and Gardens in the Battery District.  Time for shopping and sightseeing before a 4:00 p.m.    departure back to St. Simons.  Lunch at Middleton Plantation, Wine and Cheese Party at the Hotel and Dinner are included in the price of $280 per person, double hotel occupancy. 

Deposit of $100 due by October 15 and payment in full is due by December 31.  Limited to 40 members.

Topic: “Life Story of Gardening”

Member Neil Henry began his gardening career while still in           kindergarten.  Both his parents were gardeners and Neil observed his father build a greenhouse and potting shed and watched his mother sowing seeds in seed boxes.  He has always been fascinated by the process of seeds growing to plants.  In 2006 he embarked on a       multi-year project of creating a garden environment for his family and other to enjoy.

 Gardening Tips for FALL

As you clean up your summer garden, think about what you would like to change. Consider rearranging for next season to make your garden more attractive.

 Plant some turnip seeds. They provide beautiful greenery for winter gardens, and young tender plants make a delicious treat.

 Plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips.

Winter Gardening Tips

Now is the time to do some pruning. Overgrown shrubs may be cut back to get a good start in the spring.

 Find some inside sunny spots for your special potted plants that can’t take the cold.

Transplant trees and shrubs that need to be moved.  Check for volunteer plants under and around your large shrubs and move to be used in other places.  Buy some clear fishing line and tie up trailing vines and untrained climbing roses.

Our friend, the ultimately talented floral designer Edward Armstrong, of Edward on St. Simons, will demonstrate his magic using greens from our gardens and local wilderness.  Edward will inspire with creative ways to decorate for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Our own multi-talented Beth Downey, Jennifer Kuja, and Catherine Wood will teach us how to make our own potted gardens.  In late April, we will

Alex Smith, acclaimed Southeastern landscape designer, will give us ideas and show us examples on screen of perfection in using landscape to complement our homes as we prepare for the annual Garden Walk.  Alex is an award-winning garden designer with a unique combination of artistic talent, horticultural knowledge, and installation skills. His designs are creative expressions of the possibilities and requirements of each garden.
